About The Queen's Head

The Queen's Head, in the village of Fyfield in Essex, is a delightful, privately-owned free house serving superb freshly-prepared menus. The fifteenth-century country pub (a Grade II listed building) is situated in beautiful countryside two miles north of Chipping Ongar in Essex, at the junction of Ongar Road, Queen Street and Dunmow Road. (Our address and a link to a zoomable Google Map of our location that shows both street-map and a satellite views are provided on the Contact and Find Us page.) The listed building retains most of its original features, including an oak-beamed lounge bar and restaurant and large inglenook fireplaces.

The village of Fyfield seems to have been a place of some importance and wealth in the Middle Ages and this is borne out by the taxation statistics. Fyfield is the home to the ancient manor house, Fyfield Hall, which is the oldest inhabited timber-framed building in England. There are an unusual number of moated sites and pre- 18th-century houses in Fyfield. Four houses, Fyfield Hall, Lampetts, Dame Anna's Farm and the Rectory date from the Middle Ages. The church dates from the 12th century. A water mill on the River Roding, about 200 yards south west of the church, was used to mill grain before the age of the machine.

The village's website http://www.fyfield-village.org/index.htm provides interesting information about it, such as that the Fyfield Pea, a type of peaflower, was discovered in the area by a tenant farmer of Fyfield Hall in 1859.

From July 1, 2007, smoking was made illegal in all enclosed spaces. An outdoor smoking area has been created outside under a large parasol at the side of the pub beside the main entrance that provides overhead heating from electric bar heaters in cold weather. Tables are provided there for the customers who want to smoke or watch village life while having a drink, perhaps accompanied by a delicious, freshly-prepared snack or meal. Smokers can also sit in the beer garden when the weather is good.

The Queen's Head is a popular watering hole for ramblers and cyclists. The ramblers walk The Essex Way, and the cyclists brave the traffic as they cycle the narrow country roads.

The beer garden at the back of the pub overlooks the River Roding, which is watched over by majestic willow and towering poplar trees and populated by ducks and moorhens.

Children under 14 years old are not allowed in the pub, but they are welcome to sit under the parasol or in the large beer garden all year round.

The Queen's Head is a traditional pub that serves very good food, fine wines, champagnes, cognacs and real ales. The high quality of the menus and service is superlative, drawing full houses from near and far.

The pub provides one of the largest selections of fine wines, champagnes and real ales in Essex. Along with these are the usual provision of lagers and soft drinks. The pub has had a prominent listing in the "The Good Pub Guide" and the "Good Beer Guide" every year since 2002.

Bar snacks and a lighter menu are available from Monday to Saturday during the lunch hours. Traditional beef, pork and lamb roasts as well as a full lunch menu are provided on Sundays.

The following roasts appear as extras on the Sunday lunch menu:

Roast Rib of Devonshire Beef - £11.95

Roast Loin of Norfolk Pork served with Crackling & Stuffing - £11.95

Welsh Leg of Lamb roasted with Thyme, Garlic & Lemon - £11.95

Mixed Roast Meats served with Stuffing - £12.95

The current menus and the wine list can be accessed from the navigation bar at the top left corner on each of the pages on this website.

The Queen's Head can seat up to 45 people and offers delicious menus freshly cooked by a professional chef. The dining/bar area is ideal for parties of any size from 2 to 22 people. The menus change throughout the year to make the best use of the fresh produce currently in season. A typical menu can provide anything from roast quail on garlic croutons with red wine jus to home-made steak-and-kidney pie with short crust pastry. To help wash down your food and delight your pallet, the pub provides a large selection of fine wines, champagnes and cognacs.
